The holidays are a wonderful time to fill the darkest time of the year with lights and get together with friends and family. However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve taken on more responsibility for the celebration, which can feel overwhelming when added to the normal stress of working and raising children.
To prepare for everything, I had to cut back on my regular workouts, canceling my gym membership to keep myself in shape, and cutting my runs down to once a week.
It’s not the end of the world—there’s always more free time in January—but I miss the stress relief that movement brings.
That’s why I’m taking some time for myself this Christmas to do a short yoga practice. I always turned to yoga during stressful times to relax and release the tension I was holding in my body.
I was looking for a short program to feel good and found Yoga to Feel Your Best Yoga with Adrienne YouTube channel.
I love this slow, gentle practice because it focuses on simplicity yoga stretching for beginners and a simple breathing exercise. There’s also one exercise I always find helpful—finding tension in the face, jaw, neck, and shoulders, and then trying to relax those muscles.
Adrienne Mishler also includes a tabletop sequence that’s done on hands and knees, lots of gentle back twists, and a series of hip-opening poses like butterfly and the child’s pose.
There’s also the head-to-knees pose, which provided a much-needed hamstring stretch. To do this, you extend one leg and bend it forward, keeping your back straight. Anyone who has watched my practice would wonder why I just sit up straight, but the truth is that my hamstrings are preventing me from moving forward any further! And so I need to keep training.
If you have 30 minutes to spare during the holidays, join me in this yoga routine.
