From the very heart of Sikhism comes the inspiring story of a former army colonel who helps free his countrymen from addiction through positive reinforcement.

Colonel Dr. Rajinder Singh is the founder and director of the Akal Drug Control Center in Punjab. His methods have helped more than 10,000 patients get rid of addictions caused by various reasons.

Dr. Singh is 91 years old, but you wouldn’t know it—he’s always working to improve the center, and plans to open a third unit are well underway.

His method depends on the transformation produced by compassion and constant reinforcement.

According to Better IndiaDr. Singh was one of the first psychiatrists in independent India, but it was his time in the army during the Indo-China War of 1962 that helped him understand the psyche behind addiction.

“Army personnel are exposed to very stressful situations. Being away from home for a long time can affect their mental health. Some even experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after combat and war,” Singh said.

At the Akpal center in Punjab’s Sangrur district, Singh faced all kinds of addictions, from intravenous drug use to bleach fumes. He even recognized a man who was addicted to the adrenaline shock of snakebites.

In all cases, his method is the same: exercise, organized sports, yoga, treatment if necessary, and the implementation of the concept of service inherent in his Sikh faith, with no room for “sermons or sermons.”

Dr. Singh believes that the root cause of addiction is some experience that a person has struggled with, and that the ultimate goal of rehabilitation is a moral reckoning with oneself or with those who have harmed them.

Remembering one patient who was hospitalized after injecting a mixture of substances that caused the collapse of two separate marriages, a combination of medication, individual and group counseling, and spiritual healing helped him overcome withdrawal.

“Withdrawal symptoms decreased, he gained six kilograms, sleep and appetite improved, his mood became cheerful. He was discharged with the advice of regular follow-up,” notes Singh. Today, the former patient works in a factory, is happily married and has referred more than 60 drug addicts from his area to this center.

Sikhs believe that being born human is the result of a first birth, like any other animal on Earth, and therefore that life must be nurtured and the fruits of it shared.

This is a great starting point for any approach to addiction treatment in society: the lives of addicts not only matter, they are beautiful and have a purpose.
